Idaho Republican Party
Political OrganizationAbout Idaho Republican Party
The Idaho Republican Party (IDGOP) is the dominant political force in Idaho, controlling the governorship, both U.S. Senate seats, all U.S. House seats, and supermajorities in both chambers of the Idaho Legislature. The party has been chaired since 2022 by Dorothy Moon, a former state representative from Stanley who defeated former party chairman Tom Luna at the 2022 Idaho Republican Convention. Under Moon’s leadership, the Idaho GOP platform has embraced positions including opposition to ranked-choice voting, support for Idaho’s near-total abortion ban, skepticism of federal public lands management, and resistance to Medicaid expansion. The party’s biennial convention is the primary forum for grassroots members to shape the platform and elect party officers. Internal tension between the party’s establishment wing — represented by Governor Brad Little, Speaker Mike Moyle, and Senate Pro Tem Kelly Anthon — and its activist grassroots base has been a defining characteristic of Idaho Republican politics through the 2020s. Idaho Republicans have not lost a statewide election since 1994.
