Brandon Mitchell: Republican Incumbent for Idaho House District 6, Seat B

Republican Brandon Mitchell, the three-term incumbent for Idaho House District 6 Seat B, is on the November 3, 2026 general election ballot against Democrat Kathy Dawes. Mitchell won the May 19, 2026 Republican primary unopposed with 6,036 votes, a result certified at 100 percent by the Idaho Secretary of State. District 6 covers the Moscow area, including Latah and Lewis counties and part of Nez Perce County, according to his Idaho Republican Party candidate page.

Background

Mitchell was raised in Syracuse, Utah, and graduated from Clearfield High School in 1988, according to his official Idaho Legislature biography. He studied criminal justice at Weber State University and later completed a business degree at Brigham Young University-Idaho.

In 2012, Mitchell purchased two retail stores, one in Moscow, Idaho, and one in Pullman, Washington. His campaign website says the business has grown to six locations since 2013, matching his official biography's listing of him as a small business co-owner with his wife, Marcie, since January 2013. Mitchell and Marcie have been married 34 years and have three children. They have also served as certified therapeutic foster parents, and Mitchell was a Boy Scouts of America leader from 2006 to 2018.

First elected to the Idaho House in 2020, Mitchell is now serving his third term. He is vice chair of the House Transportation and Defense Committee and a member of the House Appropriations Committee. On his Idaho Republican Party candidate page, he describes himself as "firm on his Pro-life stance, First and Second Amendment protections."

Legislative Record

Mitchell was the House floor sponsor of three bills that became law in the 2026 session. House Bill 742 let vehicle dealers cancel or discharge liens electronically and allowed digital records to serve as evidence of vehicle ownership. It passed the House 67-0-3 and the Senate 33-0-2, and the governor signed it March 26, 2026.

Senate Bill 1292 added training requirements for licensed foster parents. It passed the Senate 34-0-1 and the House 70-0-0, and the governor signed it March 20, 2026.

House Bill 873 cleaned up three sections of a 2025 law that set uniform election deadlines for county clerks, covering soil and water conservation districts, sparsely populated precincts, and canvassing timelines. It passed the House 69-0-1 and the Senate 34-0-1, and the governor signed it April 2, 2026.

Mitchell was also the House sponsor of Senate Joint Memorial 109, which calls on Congress to pass a constitutional amendment affirming state authority over election processes. Both chambers adopted it, and it was delivered to the Secretary of State on March 30, 2026.

Mitchell sponsored House Bill 621, which would have let concealed carry permit holders bring firearms into the public areas of county buildings while keeping the existing ban on carrying inside courtrooms. He told Boise State Public Radio: "[Counties are] using this law to be able to block you from carrying a firearm into the county building where you should be able to do your normal, daily duties or daily activities...while being able to carry [your gun] at the same time." The bill passed the House 56-11-3 on April 2, 2026, then died in the Senate State Affairs Committee without a vote.

Campaign Priorities

On his Idaho Republican Party candidate page, Mitchell names three top issues:

• Property taxes. He writes that "we must work collaboratively with local governments...while bringing greater accountability, transparency, and long-term tax relief to Idaho homeowners."
• Education. He supports "a quality, free public education built on core subjects" along with career and technical education programs, and says "parents must have a strong voice in their child's education."
• Voting rights. He writes that "every legal vote matters" and that he remains committed to strengthening election integrity.

On his campaign website, Mitchell writes: "Parents, not the government, are the ultimate authority in a child's life."
