Brandon Mitchell: Idaho Republican Incumbent for House District 6B
Brandon Mitchell is a Republican member of the Idaho House of Representatives representing District 6B. Mitchell lives in Moscow, Idaho, and is seeking re-election in the May 19, 2026, Republican primary. He is serving his third term representing Legislative District 6B in north central Idaho. The general election is scheduled for November 3, 2026.
Background
Brandon Mitchell was raised in Syracuse, Utah, and graduated from Clearfield High School. He attended Weber State University and later earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Brigham Young University-Idaho, completing that degree in 2022 while serving in the legislature. Mitchell began his career managing a Jiffy Lube location in Portland, Oregon, in 1989. He became a district manager for Heartland Automotive Services, overseeing stores across the Tri-Cities region. In 2013, he and his wife purchased two Jiffy Lube franchises in Moscow, Idaho, and Pullman, Washington, and co-own Candura Corporation, which operates those franchises. Mitchell has also worked since 2015 as a certified open water scuba instructor. He holds a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and served as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America from 2006 to 2018. He and his wife Marcie have three children and six grandchildren and have served as certified therapeutic foster parents.
Political Career
Brandon Mitchell was first elected to the Idaho House of Representatives in November 2020, representing the former District 5A. Following redistricting after the 2020 census, he ran successfully in 2022 in the redrawn District 6B, which includes portions of Latah, Lewis, and Nez Perce counties. Re-elected in 2024, Mitchell defeated Democrat Kathy Dawes 16,157 to 11,649 votes. He is currently serving his third term.
Current committee assignments include the Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee (JFAC), where Mitchell serves as a member, and the Transportation and Defense Committee, where he serves as vice chair. He also sits on the Joint Millennium Fund Committee. JFAC is the Idaho Legislature’s primary budget-setting committee, responsible for reviewing agency budget requests and setting spending levels each fiscal year. In earlier sessions, Mitchell chaired the Local Government Committee and served on the House Education Committee and the Judiciary Rules and Administration Committee. During his first term he served on the Business Committee and the Health and Welfare Committee.
Fiscal oversight has been a central focus of Mitchell’s JFAC work. He publishes weekly constituent newsletters tracking committee activity during sessions. In the 2026 session, he voted with a majority of House JFAC members against a supplemental funding request to implement Medicaid eligibility changes and SNAP work requirements, as reported by the Idaho Capital Sun.
Over his first three terms, Mitchell’s voting and sponsorship record has covered abortion restrictions, election administration, and housing policy. In 2021, he voted in favor of H0366, the Fetal Heartbeat Preborn Child Protection Act, prohibiting abortion following detection of a fetal heartbeat. In 2022, he voted for S1309, which amended that law to revise its penalties and enforcement mechanisms. A voter ID bill, H0340, was among his sponsored legislation in 2023.
In 2024, Mitchell served as floor sponsor for H0545, a rent regulation preemption bill prohibiting local governments from enacting rent control ordinances or requiring participation in federal housing assistance programs. The bill passed 59-11 and was signed into law. In the 2026 session, he sponsored Senate Bill 1237 in the House, which Idaho Public Radio described as closing the voter affidavit loophole.
Policy Positions
Fiscal restraint is Mitchell’s most prominent legislative theme. As a JFAC member, he has framed his role as scrutinizing agency budgets and holding spending to maintenance levels. In a constituent newsletter quoted by Idaho Public Radio, Mitchell wrote that his goal on JFAC is to ensure “your tax dollars are treated with respect.”
On housing policy, Mitchell’s floor sponsorship of H0545 placed him among legislators who opposed local rent control authority. The bill was covered by Idaho Reports as highlighting a partisan divide on housing affordability in the legislature.
On education, Mitchell has expressed support for parental choice policies and trade school availability. He has advocated for reducing administrative overhead in higher education, as outlined on his campaign website. On public lands, he has stated support for transferring federal land management to state and local control. On election administration, his legislative record reflects a sustained focus on tightening voter identification requirements and restricting practices he characterizes as vulnerabilities in the electoral process.
Political Alignment
Brandon Mitchell appears aligned with the traditional conservative Republican wing of the Idaho Legislature. His endorsements from the Idaho Fraternal Order of Police, the Idaho Dairy Industry PAC, AgraPac, and the Idaho Association of Realtors are listed on his campaign website. These are consistent with the governing coalition of mainstream Idaho Republican legislators. He has also been endorsed by Idaho Speaker of the House Mike Moyle and Representative Brent Crane. His JFAC service, his floor sponsorship of the rent regulation preemption bill, and his voting record on abortion restrictions and election administration reflect priorities shared broadly across the Republican majority without documented ties to the activist wing of the party.
Campaign and Endorsements
