How to Change Your Party Affiliation
1
Before the deadline (March 13 for May 19 primary)
Submit a voter registration update form to your county clerk — by mail, online at voteidaho.gov, or in person. Select your new party affiliation on the form.
2
At the polls on Election Day (unaffiliated voters only)
If you are currently unaffiliated, bring your ID to the polls and ask to sign a Declaration of Party Affiliation. This changes your registration to that party and lets you vote in their primary that day.
3
After the primary
You can return to unaffiliated status or change parties at any time outside the pre-primary window. Submit a form to your county clerk or update online at voteidaho.gov.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Idaho's Republican primary open or closed?▾
Idaho's Republican primary is closed. Only voters registered as Republican can receive a Republican primary ballot. You must be registered Republican before the party affiliation change deadline — which for the May 19, 2026 primary has already passed. However, unaffiliated (non-affiliated) voters may affiliate with the Republican Party at the polls on Election Day by signing a Declaration of Party Affiliation.
Can unaffiliated voters vote in the Idaho primary?▾
Yes. Unaffiliated voters in Idaho have two options: (1) Vote in the Democratic primary without changing registration — the Democratic primary is open to all registered voters. (2) Affiliate with the Republican Party at the polls on Election Day by signing a Declaration of Party Affiliation, then vote in the Republican primary.
When is the deadline to change party affiliation in Idaho?▾
Idaho law requires voters to change party affiliation no later than the 10th Friday before the primary election. For the May 19, 2026 primary, that deadline was March 13, 2026. This deadline has passed. However, unaffiliated voters can still affiliate at the polls on Election Day.
Is Idaho's Democratic primary open or closed?▾
Idaho's Democratic primary is open. Any registered Idaho voter — including those registered as unaffiliated — can vote in the Democratic primary without changing their party registration.
How do I affiliate with a party at the polls in Idaho?▾
If you are currently unaffiliated (not registered with any party), you can sign a Declaration of Party Affiliation at your polling place on Election Day. This changes your registration to that party and allows you to vote in their primary. If you later want to become unaffiliated again, you can submit a form to your county clerk after the election.
What if I am registered with one party but want to vote in the other party's primary?▾
If you are registered with one party (e.g., Democrat) and want to vote in another party's primary (e.g., Republican), you would have needed to change your party registration before the March 13, 2026 deadline. Registered party members cannot switch at the polls — that option is only available to unaffiliated voters.
Can I change my party affiliation after the primary?▾
Yes. You can change your party affiliation at any time outside of the pre-primary blackout window. Submit a voter registration form or party change form to your county clerk. Changes made after the primary will take effect for future elections.
What party ballot do Libertarian or Constitution party voters receive?▾
Voters registered Libertarian vote in the Libertarian primary. Voters registered with the Constitution Party vote in the Constitution Party primary. If those parties have candidates on the ballot in your district, you will receive their primary ballot.
