David Leavitt is a first-term Republican member of the Idaho House of Representatives representing District 25 Seat B, covering Twin Falls and the surrounding Magic Valley. Leavitt took office December 1, 2024 and is seeking re-election in the May 19, 2026 Republican primary. The general election is November 3, 2026.
Background
Per his official Idaho Legislature biography, Leavitt is a retired U.S. Army combat veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and was born and raised in the Magic Valley. His committee assignments include Agricultural Affairs, Commerce & Human Resources, and Health & Welfare.
Political Career
Leavitt took office on December 1, 2024 after defeating incumbent Rep. Greg Lanting in the May 21, 2024 Republican primary and winning the November 5, 2024 general. He is one of four Magic Valley legislators who entered office in the 2024 cycle on the Magic Valley Liberty Alliance candidate slate alongside Sen. Glenneda Zuiderveld, Sen. Joshua Kohl, and Rep. Clint Hostetler. His House District 25 paired-vote partner is Sen. Joshua Kohl on the Senate side of the same district.
Policy Positions
Leavitt voted against House Bill 445 (2025), the water-stewardship bill that funds Magic Valley aquifer recharge for the irrigated-agriculture economy. Per the Times-News editorial board column of April 19, 2025, Leavitt was named alongside Kohl, Hostetler, and Zuiderveld among Magic Valley legislators who voted against the bill. He also voted against House Bill 125, an Idaho funding measure. Per Political Potatoes, Leavitt was named among five legislators who attended the opening event of Old State Saloon, an Eagle venue owned by 2026 gubernatorial candidate Mark Fitzpatrick.
Political Alignment
Leavitt is Idaho Freedom Foundation-aligned. Per Political Potatoes' February 14, 2025 reporting, he attended the 2024 Young Americans for Liberty National Convention with Zuiderveld, Kohl, Hostetler, and Sen. Christy Zito. His House District 25 is paired with Sen. Joshua Kohl on the Senate side.
Campaign and Endorsements
Leavitt is running in the May 19, 2026 Republican primary. Per the Idaho Sunshine portal, his 2026 campaign is supported by approximately $7,925 in independent expenditures from Citizens Alliance of Idaho PAC, with approximately $2,056 in opposition from WinAg PAC. Idaho EdNews has reported that Citizens Alliance of Idaho PAC draws substantial out-of-state funding, including a $450,000 transfer from a Virginia-based federal affiliate and Pennsylvania gaming-related sources. His 2024 campaign also received support from Young Americans for Liberty's Make Liberty Win field operation. A separate Idaho EdNews report lists Leavitt among 20 candidates supported by Rep. Jordan Redman's 36-18-1 Inc. PAC, seeded with $250,000 of personal money. The general election is November 3, 2026.
