Ron Taylor: Idaho Democratic Incumbent for State Senate District 26

Ron Taylor is a Democrat and incumbent member of the Idaho State Senate District 26, representing Blaine, Jerome, and Lincoln counties. He lives in Hailey, Idaho, and is seeking a third term in 2026. His Republican primary opponent is Christine Marie Ivie, according to Ballotpedia.

Background

Taylor was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and moved to Idaho in 1982. He graduated from Olympus High School and attended the University of Utah, where he studied anthropology and genetics, as documented in his official Idaho Legislature biography. He also completed paramedic school and fire academy training. Taylor served 27 years as a firefighter and paramedic with Wood River Fire & Rescue and the Ketchum Fire Department, rising to the rank of captain. He retired from that career before entering politics.

Taylor is an Eagle Scout and received the President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2022 in recognition of more than 30 years of volunteer work with organizations including the Crisis Hotline, Mountain Humane, Wood River Trails Coalition, and Wood River Land Trust. Before his firefighting career, Taylor worked as a landscaper, hotel maintenance worker, and chef, as noted on his campaign website. He continues to wash dishes at a Hailey restaurant when the business needs extra staff. He lives with his wife, Alex.

Political Career

Taylor was first elected to the Idaho State Senate in November 2022, defeating Republican Laurie Lickley with approximately 66 percent of the vote, according to the Idaho Capital Sun. He assumed office on December 1, 2022. He succeeded Michelle Stennett, a Democrat who had held the seat for many years. During his first term, Taylor served on the Agricultural Affairs, Health and Welfare, and Resources and Environment committees, per the Idaho Legislature’s official records. In his current second term, his committee assignments shifted to Agricultural Affairs, Local Government and Taxation, and Resources and Environment.

In 2024, Lickley ran a rematch campaign. Taylor retained his seat by 367 votes in a three-way race that also included independent candidate Kala Tate, who received 10.5 percent of the vote, as reported by the Idaho Mountain Express. Final vote totals showed Taylor with 10,319 votes (45.6 percent) compared to Lickley’s 9,952 (43.9 percent).

Policy Positions

On reproductive health, Taylor was among the co-sponsors of Senate Bill 1234 in 2024, legislation that required health benefit plans to reimburse enrollees for a six-month supply of prescription contraception at a time. The bill passed and took effect July 1, 2024. In an op-ed published in the Idaho Mountain Express, Taylor described the measure as a win for reproductive freedom and criticized the Republican majority for what he characterized as policies amounting to forced pregnancy. He wrote that the bill “should have passed in a landslide” but ultimately passed the House by a single vote. Taylor has stated that government has no role in decisions about family planning, reproductive healthcare, or who individuals choose to marry.

On education, Taylor has called for increased school funding, better teacher compensation, and improved school facilities. On his campaign issues page he wrote that Idaho should not be celebrating budget surpluses while schools trail the nation. On public lands, Taylor has stated his opposition to the sale of Idaho public lands to private individuals or corporations, describing such transactions as harmful to agriculture, recreation, and tourism. On water, Taylor identifies water preservation as the state’s most important shared resource. He supports cooperation among water users, infrastructure upgrades, and increased conservation efforts.

On housing, Taylor has acknowledged the strain that rapid growth in the Wood River Valley has placed on working residents. He has stated that the free market alone cannot solve the housing crisis in the district and that the legislature needs to develop solutions, as outlined on his campaign issues page. On first responder mental health, Taylor has publicly advocated for the continuation and expansion of Idaho’s Post Traumatic Stress Injury workers’ compensation provisions. Idaho Code 72-451 provides coverage for first responders with documented occupational PTSI, a law Taylor described as a priority given his career background. The statute was originally enacted in 2019 and was made permanent by the legislature in 2023.

Political Alignment

Taylor is classified as a Liberal Democrat. His legislative record and public statements reflect consistent support for reproductive rights, public land protection, expanded healthcare access, and education investment. His co-sponsorship of the contraception access bill and his explicit criticism of Republican restrictions on reproductive healthcare place him clearly to the left of moderate Idaho Democratic positioning. He has used direct language in published opinion pieces calling Republican policies “forced pregnancy” and calling out the Republican supermajority for reducing individual freedoms. His endorsements from Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates Idaho and Conservation Voters for Idaho are consistent with this classification.

Campaign and Endorsements

Taylor’s 2026 campaign has listed endorsements from Conservation Voters for Idaho, Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates Idaho, the Idaho Education Association, the Professional Firefighters of Idaho, and Nampa Firefighters Local 804, as listed on his campaign endorsements page. He has also received endorsements from current and former elected officials including former Sen. Michelle Stennett, Blaine County Commissioner Muffy Davis, and former state representatives Wendy Jaquet and Heidi Husbands. Taylor’s campaign treasurer is Michelle Stennett, and he accepts donations through ActBlue.
