Brian Beckley: Idaho Republican Challenger for House District 8B
Brian Beckley is a Republican candidate challenging incumbent
Rep. Faye Thompson in the May 19, 2026 primary for the Idaho House of Representatives in District 8B. Beckley lives in Hammett and is making his first run for elected office. District 8 covers Boise, Custer, Elmore, and Valley counties. The winner of the Republican primary will face Democrat Jared Dawson of Boise in the November 3, 2026 general election.
Background
Beckley grew up on his family's homestead near
Henry's Lake in eastern Idaho and identifies as a sixth-generation Idahoan. He studied at Boise State University and began his career as a fisheries biologist, joining Boise-based Biomark, Inc., a company that supplies electronic identification technology to fisheries and wildlife research. He spent more than two decades at Biomark,
rising to Chief Operations Officer and ultimately President, and holds bachelor's degrees in business administration and finance.
After leaving Biomark, Beckley co-founded
Voda IQ, a Hammett-headquartered company that produces RFID and PIT tagging systems for fisheries research and wildlife conservation. He and his wife Traci also operate a
ranch in Hammett, as reported by Valley Lookout.
Beckley has volunteered with Trout Unlimited and the Mule Deer Foundation. He serves as President-Elect of the Data and Technology Section of the American Fisheries Society.
Political Career
Beckley has not previously held elected office. His most significant prior public service was on the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation Board, where he served as the District 3 representative after his
appointment by Governor Brad Little in 2019. Beckley later served as board chairman and presided over decisions on grant allocations, land use agreements with the Idaho Department of Lands, and cooperative projects with the Idaho Transportation Department.
Beckley
resigned from the Parks and Recreation Board on January 5, 2026 and appointed a campaign treasurer two days earlier in advance of his House run.
Policy Positions
Beckley's campaign website organizes his stated positions under three headings: economic conservatism, fiscal conservatism, and Idaho conservatism.
On economic issues, he expresses support for limited government, reduced regulation, free market principles, and protection of Idaho's water rights, describing agriculture as a backbone industry of the state. On fiscal matters, he states support for balancing the budget, lowering taxes, and reducing government spending. On social and cultural issues, his website describes him as "100 percent pro-life and pro-gun," supportive of law enforcement, and in favor of border security. He also states opposition to what he characterizes as "woke policies."
His campaign website does not include detailed position statements on specific Idaho policy areas such as public lands management, education funding, or water law beyond general thematic language. As of April 2026, no extended interviews or candidate questionnaires have been located.
Political Alignment
Brian Beckley is a Traditional Conservative Republican.
Beckley's professional record reflects long association with Idaho's natural resources and agricultural sectors, and his appointment to the Idaho Parks and Recreation Board by Governor Brad Little places him within Idaho's conservative governing wing. His campaign messaging emphasizes limited government, agricultural interests, and fiscal restraint, and his early fundraising includes
support from the Idaho Dairy Industry Political Action Committee, an indicator of agricultural industry alignment. He is challenging an incumbent who is a member of the Idaho House Gang of Eight, which positions Beckley as the alternative to that wing of the Republican caucus in District 8B.
Campaign and Endorsements
Beckley filed for the District 8B Republican primary ahead of the February 27, 2026 candidate filing deadline. Through early 2026,
Beckley had raised $31,270, more than three times Thompson's $9,020 — a fundraising advantage that ranks among the most lopsided in any Gang of Eight incumbency contest this cycle. His early donors include the Idaho Dairy Industry Political Action Committee. As of April 2026, no formal organizational endorsements have been publicly reported.
