Attorney General
Lori Hickman, Democratic candidate for Idaho Attorney General
Lori Hickman, a Democrat, is a Boise attorney and a candidate for Idaho Attorney General in the November 3, 2026 general election. She filed on February 27, 2026, and the Idaho Secretary of State lists the filing as approved. She won the May 19, 2026 Democratic primary unopposed, with 44,212 votes, according to the Idaho Secretary of State's certified results. Her opponent is Republican Attorney General Raúl Labrador.
Background
The Idaho Capital Sun's 2026 voter guide lists her as 61, an attorney from Boise who has lived in Idaho for 30 years. In a CBS2/FOX9 candidate survey she wrote that she was "Born on an Air Force Base on Cape Cod, MA" and that she graduated from Brigham Young University magna cum laude with a degree in finance and earned her law degree there, graduating with honors in 1991.
Her campaign website says she "began her legal career as a litigation associate in the New York City office of Latham & Watkins, then took a position at Holme Roberts & Owen in Salt Lake City for one year before being recruited in 1996 to join Micron Technology's in-house team as associate general counsel." It says she left the legal field in 2002 to raise her three children, resumed legal work in 2012 for the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho, and joined a Boise law firm in 2014.
The Idaho State Bar's attorney roster lists Hickman as active, of counsel at McFarland Ritter, with an Idaho admittance date of October 5, 2018. New York's attorney registration data lists her as admitted in 1992 and currently registered, with McFarland Ritter as her firm.
East Idaho News reported in May 2026 that she "stepped down after serving five years as board chair for Mormon Women for Ethical Government" because of her decision to run for office. She told the outlet: "I'm an everyday Idahoan stepping off the sidelines."
Positions
In the Capital Sun's voter guide she wrote: "I support Proposition 1, and more importantly, I believe in respecting the right of Idaho voters to propose ballot initiatives and participate directly in our democratic process." She wrote that if voters approve the abortion initiative she will "implement and defend that law as written," and that if they reject it she will "defend Idaho law as written." Labrador wrote in the same questionnaire: "I oppose Proposition 1 because it is too extreme."
The Idaho Capital Sun reported on August 13, 2026 that U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill ruled in an 81-page decision that the U.S. Constitution establishes "a narrow but fundamental right to abortion when a pregnancy threatens the woman's life or health," and that Labrador said: "We will appeal immediately." In an August 24, 2026 campaign statement Hickman said Winmill "got it right." She said: "I would not have appealed the ruling. If I am elected as Idaho Attorney General, I will withdraw the appeal." She said: "Mr. Labrador has made a cottage industry out of over-the-top abortion litigation."
In the CBS2/FOX9 survey she wrote: "Under Raúl Labrador, the Attorney General's Office has become increasingly defined by political ambition, costly ideological lawsuits, and national culture wars." She wrote: "I practice law, not politics." She said she would "restore that longstanding practice – and statutory requirement" of providing legal analysis on pending legislation when the Legislature asks for it. The survey says Labrador did not submit responses.
On the Land Board, she wrote in the Capital Sun's voter guide: "Unfortunately, trust in the current AG has eroded to the point that the Land Board fired him from that role." East Idaho News reported that she said of staffing: "There will not be a purging."
Endorsements and supporters
On October 1, 2026, former Republican Attorneys General Lawrence Wasden and Jim Jones and dozens of former lawyers from the Attorney General's office endorsed Hickman, the Idaho Capital Sun reported. Former deputy attorneys general Madison Miles and Daphne Huang were among the endorsers named. Wasden said: "The rule of law really is the issue that separates us from any other country in the world. That is, that the law applies to everyone, and it's not based upon someone's personal political view."
Hickman said at the news conference: "I'm trying to restore the tradition of sound legal advice, regardless of who the clients are or their political affiliations. So I'm running as a Democrat because my opponent's a Republican." The Sun reported that voters in the state last elected a Democrat to statewide office in 2002 and that Idaho's last Democratic attorney general was Larry Echohawk in 1995.
Veterans for Idaho Voters, which describes itself as "a nonpartisan 501(c)(4) veterans civic education organization," lists her among its endorsed candidates for state races.
What critics say
The Labrador campaign responded to the October 1 endorsements, the Capital Sun reported: "Lawrence Wasden, Jim Jones, and disgruntled former employees. Who would have thought?"
