Will Johanson, Libertarian candidate for U.S. House, Idaho District 2

Will Johanson, a Libertarian from Boise, is a candidate for Idaho's 2nd Congressional District in the November 3, 2026 general election. He filed on February 25, 2026, and the Idaho Secretary of State's filed-candidates search lists the filing as approved. He won the May 19, 2026 Libertarian primary unopposed, with 336 votes, according to the Idaho Secretary of State's certified results. His opponents are Republican incumbent Mike Simpson, Democrat Ellie Gilbreath and independents Emre Houser and Tripp Charles Hutchinson.

Background

The Idaho Capital Sun described Johanson, 33, as an engineer in the semiconductor industry in Boise who previously served as a nuclear operator in the U.S. Navy and moved to Idaho in 2020.

His campaign website says he was born and raised in California's Central Valley, served aboard the USS Georgia, honorably separated from the Navy in 2020 and "earned both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Materials Science & Engineering from Boise State University" using the GI Bill.

Positions

His campaign website says: "In Congress, I will vote 'No' on any budget that will increase the national debt." A summary on the page reads: "Taxation? Theft." It also reads: "The Second Amendment? Shall not be infringed." and "Immigration? Close the border."

In a CBS2/FOX9 candidate survey in August 2026 he wrote: "I pledge to introduce legislation to abolish the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and replace it or move its duties to another agency in the Department of Energy that has not proven its hostility to nuclear power." On federal land he wrote: "The best role for the federal government is to return public lands to public hands, where private owners with personal interest can manage the land and wildlife."

The Idaho Capital Sun reported that Johanson said much of the federal land permitted to ranchers for grazing should be sold to those ranchers, and that he supports moving ownership of national forests to the state. The Sun quoted him: "The vast majority of federal land is not this sort of appealing, pristine natural beauty."

In the CBS2/FOX9 survey he wrote of Simpson: "Representative Mike Simpson has been right with the President every step of the way, aiding and abetting." He wrote of the Democrats that they prefer "to redistribute wealth from the industrious to the indolent and cozy to their global like-minds." He wrote: "We are done with the foreign wars, we are done with the spirit-crushing inflation, and we don't need the government to solve our problems."

The Idaho Capital Sun's 2026 voter guide lists "This candidate did not respond to the questionnaire" beneath Johanson's name.
