Rep. Mike Veile, the first-term appointed incumbent, won a contested May 19, 2026 Republican primary for Idaho House District 35 Seat A, defeating former Rep. Chad Christensen 4,575 votes to 3,588 (56.05% to 43.95%), according to certified Idaho Secretary of State results. He faces Democrat Walter Boyd in the November 3, 2026 general election.
Background
Gov. Brad Little appointed Veile to the House seat on September 25, 2025, filling the vacancy left when Rep. Kevin Andrus resigned to become Idaho's state executive director for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency, according to the Governor's office. Veile worked at Monsanto from 1998 to 2025 and owns Process Improvement Engineering. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Utah State University and is a licensed professional engineer. He has served as a local school board trustee, past president of the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and past board member of the Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry and Idaho Business for Education. On his appointment, he said: "I have always been motivated to solve problems." He and his wife, Shelly, have been married more than 30 years and have four children.

Veile serves on the House Business, Education, and Transportation and Defense committees, per the Legislature's 2026 roster. In a March 2026 Idaho Education News interview, he said of his approach to legislating: "I love sitting down in a room with different stakeholders and trying to get to a result." On students with special needs, he said: "We cannot turn our backs on those students. They will become members of our society. It's in all of our best interests to make them as successful as possible." On budgeting, he said: "Fiscal responsibility is also not passing costs on to our local governments."
