Chance Marshall: Democratic Nominee for Idaho House District 33 Seat A

Chance Marshall won the May 19, 2026 Democratic primary for Idaho House District 33 Seat A without opposition, receiving 653 votes, according to certified Idaho Secretary of State results. He faces five-term Republican incumbent Rep. Barbara Ehardt in the November 3, 2026 general election. This is Marshall's first campaign for public office; Idaho Secretary of State records show no prior electoral history under his name.

Background

Marshall is a project manager and president of the Bonneville Young Democrats. He was raised across the rural South and urban West, including time in Kentucky and Tennessee, before settling in Idaho Falls, according to his campaign website and a June 2025 op-ed republished by the Bonneville County Democrats. He describes himself as a former registered Republican who campaigned for Republican candidates before switching to the Democratic Party. He is married, has a son, and has dogs and a cat.

In the op-ed, published on the Bonneville County Democrats' website after appearing as a Post Register guest column, Marshall wrote: "As president of the Bonneville County Young Democrats here in Idaho Falls, my main purpose and goal while in this role is to recruit and appeal to the younger Democratic voters." He cited local voter-registration data: "Currently there are 16,118 unaffiliated voters registered within Bonneville County. Around 8,831 of those are between the ages of 18 to 44... that is nearly 9,000 unreached members of the community that do not have a direct affiliation with a political party." He added: "To the marginalized communities, to the members of the community that feel they are underrepresented and haven't been heard within politics here in Idaho, and to those that may have voted previously for politicians that don't truly represent their values, the Bonneville Young Democrats see you. We hear you."

Activism

Marshall has organized and spoken at several Idaho Falls political demonstrations. East Idaho News reported he was an organizer of a roughly 300-person "ICE Out" rally on the Broadway Bridge in Idaho Falls on January 31, 2026, and had organized previous protests in the city; he told the outlet counter-protesters "make a lot of noise online, but we believe that might be because they're trying to confuse people. There's no real organizing behind it like what we have. We're always cautious, and we always make preparations... to prepare for de-escalation and to resolve conflicts." He also spoke at an Idaho Falls "No Kings" rally on March 29, 2026, telling LocalNews8, "we're going to let our voice be heard," and was a speaker at an Idaho Falls May Day rally on workers' rights on May 1, 2026.
