Todd DeVries: Democratic Nominee for Idaho House District 33 Seat B

Todd DeVries won the May 19, 2026 Democratic primary for Idaho House District 33 Seat B without opposition, receiving 649 votes, according to certified Idaho Secretary of State results. He faces three-term Republican incumbent Rep. Marco Erickson in the November 3, 2026 general election. This is DeVries's first campaign for public office; Idaho Secretary of State records show no prior legislative electoral history under his name.

Background

DeVries is a licensed master social worker who has practiced as a mental health counselor in Idaho Falls since 2018, according to the federal NPPES registry, which lists him as active under license LMSW-37330. He is the Bonneville County Democratic Central Committee's state committeeman, per the Bonneville County Democrats. On his campaign Facebook page, he describes himself: "A licensed social worker, I'm a mental health counselor and part-time university instructor. I'm running for Seat 33B because we need legislators who put people first. Together, let's build a state that creates strong communities and champions equality."

Public Writing

DeVries has written a series of opinion columns for the Bonneville County Democrats since at least 2024. In a February 13, 2026 piece, "Diagnosing the Legislature: It's Time for an Intervention," he drew on his clinical background: "One common function of mental health professionals is evaluating and assigning specific diagnostic codes to clients. These codes unlock the funds that insurance companies pay for treatment. For example, F 41.1 equates to generalized anxiety disorder; F 33, depression." He went on to write: "What diagnosis might a therapist discover if the legislature walked into his or her office?", citing his own tallies of state tax cuts and budget figures as evidence for his argument that state government needed a course correction.
