Doreen Alexander
Doreen Alexander moved to Idaho in 2002, seeking what she calls “a better life” for her family. Born and raised in Southern California, she spent a decade in Las Vegas before landing in Idaho. She talks about how the state’s religious freedoms and conservative values were a blessing when she first arrived. But now, she claims those blessings are “slipping away” and has made it her mission to fight back.
Alexander is a leader in the Magic Valley Liberty Alliance (MVLA), a group that presents itself as a defender of freedom and traditional values. But behind the patriotic slogans and church meetings, MVLA has spent years targeting well-respected Republican leaders and replacing them with far-right extremists. These efforts, far from helping Idaho, have created more division and dysfunction in the state’s politics.
The MVLA promotes a Christian nationalist agenda, blending religion with politics in ways that make even many conservative Idahoans uncomfortable. While Alexander speaks passionately about protecting liberty, her group focuses on attacking mainstream Republicans who don’t fit their extreme views. This strategy has pushed good Republican leaders out of office and replaced them with people who care more about loyalty to the MVLA’s agenda than serving the people of Idaho.
Alexander frequently talks about her upbringing and credits her political views to her father, who discussed politics at the dinner table and listened to Rush Limbaugh. She has said that this background gave her an appreciation for freedom and morality. But her version of freedom seems to mean freedom only for people who agree with her, while those with different beliefs are dismissed or attacked.
One of MVLA’s key tactics is smearing Republican candidates they don’t like by calling them RINOs (Republicans in Name Only). This label is often slapped on anyone who doesn’t go along with their far-right agenda, even if the candidate has a long history of conservative leadership. Instead of supporting experienced and thoughtful conservatives, MVLA backs candidates who promote fringe ideas and conspiracy theories.
The group has also partnered with other far-right organizations in Idaho, like the Idaho Freedom Foundation, and figures like Ammon Bundy. Their candidates often talk about eliminating public schools, defunding child protective services, and opposing any government programs they don’t personally approve of. These are not mainstream Republican ideas—they are radical positions that would harm Idaho families and communities.
By targeting moderates and mainstream conservatives, Alexander and the MVLA are tearing apart the Republican Party in Idaho. Their attacks and divisive tactics don’t just weaken the party—they hurt the state as a whole. Idaho deserves leaders who can work together to solve problems, not extremists who spend their time pointing fingers and creating chaos.
Doreen Alexander likes to talk about the importance of being “awake” to the battle for liberty. But her actions and her group’s agenda have done more to damage Idaho’s freedom than to protect it.
